Budget Bathroom Makeover: 9 Upgrades Without Ripping Out Tile
Transform a tired bathroom without demolition: paint the vanity, regrout, peel-and-stick floor tiles, new mirror and lighting, hardware and accessories.

A full bathroom remodel is one of the most expensive home projects. But if the plumbing works and the tile is sound, you can get a "new bathroom" feeling in a few weekends. Here's the upgrade list we'd follow, in order of impact per dollar.
1. Deep clean and recaulk
Remove old silicone, clean mold with a suitable cleaner, dry thoroughly, and apply fresh sanitary silicone. It costs very little and instantly looks fresh.
2. Regrout
Stained grout ages a bathroom more than dated tile. Follow our regrouting guide or, for grout that's sound but stained, try a grout colorant pen.
3. Paint the walls and ceiling
Use a bathroom paint rated for moisture and mildew. A soft white or a moody color (navy, forest green, clay) changes the whole feeling.
4. Paint the vanity
Remove doors and hardware, degrease, sand, bonding primer, then two coats of cabinet enamel. Deep blue and green vanities with brass hardware are a timeless combination.
5. Update the hardware
New handles, towel bars, hooks and toilet-roll holder in one finish (brushed brass, matte black or chrome) tie the room together.
6. Peel-and-stick floor tiles or vinyl
Quality peel-and-stick vinyl tiles can go over a clean, flat, sound floor. Seal the edges at the tub and toilet with silicone. Great for rentals and quick fixes; not for wet-room showers.
7. New mirror and lighting
An oversized round or arched mirror and a new vanity light make the biggest visual difference. Hard-wired fixtures should be installed per local rules — in bathrooms that often means an electrician.
8. Faucet and shower head
Modern, water-saving fixtures in a matching finish. Swapping a shower head takes 10 minutes and plumber's tape.
9. Textiles and plants
Thick towels, a washable rug, a fabric shower curtain hung high, and a humidity-loving plant (pothos, fern) finish the look.
